Kate Arnold’s Kingman High School Photo Class is once again displaying a variety of landscape photos of Arizona.  It is the 15th annual Carlos Elmer Contest displayed on the second floor of The Powerhouse in downtown Kingman. The show is open to the public from March 21st to May 1st.  Local photographers Bill Schilling, Daryl Heinitz and Julie Holmes have judged the contest.  There are ballots for our public to vote on their favorite pictures.

On the second floor of The Powerhouse there is a permanent exhibit displaying photography of Kingman’s famous photographer Carlos Elmer.  The yearly contest helps to recognize and pay tribute to a fine Kingman artist.  The magazine Arizona Highways published many of his fine photos of Arizona landscapes.  Mr. Elmer is deceased, but his family still sponsors the show by donating $100 to the 1st place winner, $60 to the 2nd place winner, $50 to the 3rd place winner and $40 for Honorable Mention.  Ms. Arnold stays in contact with the family and assigns the landscape project to her different KHS photo classes.  We believe Mr. Elmer would be pleased with the results.

The Lake Havasu High School CTE Open House on February 5 had a steady stream of people beginning promptly at 4 o’clock and continuing past 7 pm.  Everyone was amazed at the number of “career-ready” programs offered at the high school, the quality and scope of the facilities/programs, and the professionalism of our faculty/staff.  Perhaps most interesting… some of the student guides made the comment that they had never been in other CTE program classrooms. They were also shocked.

Before the regular meeting an audience of approximately 20 people toured the Land Lab where Parker has over 28 acres of alfalfa plants and pens and corrals for the students’ animals.  The group viewed pigs, sheep and steers and learned about the crops. The group also toured all the CTE classrooms to see the progress and improvements that JTED funding had added.

In other news, the board approved a $5,000 Unique Opportunities grant for the welding class at Parker.  The money will be used to purchase a Torchmate CNC Welding series.  This includes CAD equipment, plasma cutters and torches, a computer and many other teaching systems.  It will be used by Mr. Goldsberry and his students.

The governing board approved offering $50,000 in Growth and Opportunity grants to each partner satellite high school in the spring.  In February Kingman will present its grant, in March the two Bullhead schools can present, in April the presentation goes to Havasu and in May, Parker will present.  Anyone requesting the funds must come before the governing board for approval.

Mrs. Parker reported the largest numbers ever of concurrent enrollment students.  There are over 75 students enrolled at either Mohave Community College or Arizona Western.  WAVE will be participating in the AZ CTE Curriculum Consortium where they will have access to nearly 3,000 separate CTE lessons.
